Week 4 | Artist 4: Created to Create 2016 | Paul Gabbard, Theatre Director, Educator, & Arts

Paul Gabbard is a member of MICHA-The Michael Chekhov Association, the Florida Arts Alliance, and the American Alliance for Theatre and Education. He is an alumnus of the Up With People Organization and the FSU Collegiate Circus. He has an undergraduate degree in General Theatre from Florida State University and a Masters Degree in Arts Administration from Savannah College of Art and Design. Recent directing projects include Every Seventeen Minutes the Crowd Goes Crazy by Paul Zindel (P.K. Yonge School); George Orwell’s Animal Farm (P.K. Yonge School); Daisy’s Adventures-The Juliette Gordon Lowe Story (Savannah Children’s Theatre) and Salt and Pepper by Jose Cruz Gonzalez (Acrosstown Repertory Theatre). He is also a play-reader for Philadelphia Young Playwrights and Florida New Writers.

I am a director, theatre educator and arts administrator. Currently, I teach and

direct middle and high school theatre at a developmental research school in

Gainesville, Florida. I also do arts administration consulting work and freelance

directing and dramaturgical research whenever I can. Shew!

Where you were born?

I was born in Gainesville, Florida, home of the Florida Gators, Gatorade, Tom Petty and the Hippodrome Regional Theatre.

The best thing about being an artist is...

Learning and teaching at the same time.

When I am looking for inspiration I...

Usually turn to other art forms; music or visual art. A really nice art museum or a new undiscovered musician with a great story is a powerful tool for me to find inspiration. I think it is also important to say that in the past 5 years I have been so inspired by my MICHA community. They are amazing, and I would recommend that anyone that is interested in growing as a performer connect with them. The first training I went to changed my life forever.

The biggest challenge in working with myself is...

Good question, I think if the birth of an idea is truly derived from me, then no one seems to have the same passion that I have for it, and that is a frustration that I often struggle with.
